Feb 12 - Exploring Words

Okay ARTICULATORS...which words are difficult for you to say? Which words are fun because of how they sound or feel when you say them? Which pronunciations of words drive you CRAZY??? It drives me bonkers when I hear people say, "melk" instead of "milk." I love to say "nonchalant" and "flabbergasted." I hate saying "minimum." My preacher cannot say "statistic," and I always wonder why he continues to try! How about you???

  1. I am not a fan of when people add an 'r' to the words wash and iron. I fail to see how that is in any way logical. I struggle with saying the ing suffix properly for whatever reason and tend to make it sound more like een. I am a big fan of the words macabre, accentuate, and aesthetic for whatever reason. My British friend can't say a few of our more American words and is continually baffled by my omission of u's in words such as honor, favorite, and flying on an airplane as opposed to an aeroplane.

  2. The word "refrigerator" is not on my list of favorite words. I've been struggling with that for a while now. Also -ing words, because i never take the time to actually say the g so i end up just saying -in like walkin', talkin'. I'm not a big fan of R's either, sometime's it almost seems like they come out as W's. Statistic is a hard word too!

  4. i hate saying February. i always pronounce it without the r after the b, so it comes out like febuary. I am guilty of saying melk instead of milk. my brother says malk. it drives me crazy. i hate it when people say "ask" like "aks". i love saying flaccid. the word is funny, and it feels funny to say.

  5. Oh wow ... I don't know. I can usually pronounce things correctly. I hate it when people pronounce "nuclear" like "nucular". That drives me crazy. And this isn't really an articulation issue, but I hate it when people tack "at" to the end of a sentence, like "Where are you at?" THAT IS WRONG! Apparently that is something Ohioans do though. I suppose I really like works that don't sound how they look. In English, one of our vocab words this week is "mnemonic", which has a silent M. How fantastic!

  6. I don't have any particular words that bother me. I really hate southern accents. Don't get me wrong, southerns are a fine bunch of people but their accent mangles the English language. They just eat words alive. Half the time you don't know what they are saying.

  7. WOW.....I really have no idea what words are hard for me to articulate. I kind of pride myself on being a pretty good speaker... I mean yeah I mess up a few words now and then because I'm not really paying attention but I try and make sure that the I pronounce words correctly because I kind of feel like people who don't think about what they're saying and how they're saying it don't care what others think of them...because believe it or not people judge you on how you talk and if you can't pronounce words then they think your uneducated which most of the time is not true! Ok so let me think about this... I guess I'm with Tom though that I struggle with pronouncing February! That's a tough one but other than that I can't think of anything!

  8. Umm there are a few words that i cannot say correctly, the main one is phone, i don't even know how i pronounce it but i always get made fun of how i pronouce it, cough cough Hope. But there are a few other words that i cannot say. And i always tend to shorten my words like was up in stead of whats up and thas instead of thats. I do that with a lot of words,i don't really know why just a habbit i guess. And i dont really get upset when people pronounce things differently because i am used to it so it dosent bother me, but i think that i should stop being so lazy and talk right, i'm in High School !

  9. Hey look! I'm not dead!
Anyway, I get tongue tied all the time, so almost every word annoys me if I have to actually speak it. Though, just recently, I found out that I really hate trying to pronounce the word "Respiratory". I try to say it, but it usually comes out as "Represitory", which just sounds like a fancy word for prison. I don't really mind when people pronounce things differently, since the way you pronounce words is apart of how you were raised. I mean, if someone came up to me and asked " Hey, would you like some corn on the cob?" and it sounded like " Hey, would you like some CONE on the cob?" I would be a little confused at first (Especially about why they were yelling the word "Cone" at me), but I still wouldn't really bother me.

  10. I tend to pronounce things the way I think they look. For example, I say "Cho-le" instead of Chloe. "Bj-jork" not Bjork pronounced "Beork". There are more, that I could not remember. I am also I poor speller. I don't remember ever excelling in spelling, or grammer. I commonly find myself using the words fantastic, awsome, and agreeable. I find it amusing when people pronounce when, where, and why: hwen, hwere, and hwy. Then there is always, "a hwile"...and.. "hwisky".

  11. I agree with Micah i cant stand when people say "warsh" instead of wash. I am also annoyed when people shorten words like using "cuz" instead of because. I mean, its only a couple more letters, are people really that lazy??? I also love to say a vocab word we have this week in english, hoi polloi! Haha... But anyway, if u really want to hear some crazy articulations listen to John Madden talk for like .5 seconds. If i didnt kno better i would think he was a three-year old.

  12. I love to say words like "analytical" or "equivocal" or "meticulous," words that have t's,q's, and c's in their articulation. I also like to verbalize spanish words. This week our vocabulary included food, and the term for "red beans" is "los habichuelas coloradas." As far as articulations that drive me crazy, I would have to agree with the vast majority in that I hate it when people say "warsh" instead of "wash." My grandma has done that for as long as I can remember, even to the point where she'll say "Warshington D.C." instead of WASHington D.C." It also kind of irks me when people say "birTday" instead of birthday. And no offense to anyone whatsoever, but I HATE western accents!

  14. I can't say many words correct for some reason. The one I can remember is volume, because I always screw it up somehow. The word that gets to me most is both. They always pronounce it "bolth", which really gets to me. There is not an L , and I don't know why people say it like that.

  15. I can't say the word "abominable" to save my life; it comes out more like "abomindadabl" when I attempt to say it. My biggest pet peeve is when people replace the "i" sound in words with an "e" sound such as in "pellow" instead of "pillow." I love saying the word "pianissimo," it's so much fun :)

  16. There isn't really that many words I can't say. I think it's kind of funny when people can't say certain words. I used to live in Delaware and people there would always add an "s" to words and it made me so mad. The people there also didn't say creek but they said "crick". One of the things that makes me the maddest is when people say "nucular" instead of saying it right which is nuclear.

  17. A few words back to back are hard for me, but aside from those few, I do not really have any hard ones to say. Two that I came across yesterday actually were "curb stomp" and "wrist watch". Just because of the change in sounds. I actually like saying "nonchalant" too. Other than that I have not really found many other words in the English language that I have trouble saying, and I also hate when people say "melk" instead of "milk".

  18. There are not many words that bother me. But i do not like people with english accents. Words that I do not like are spanish words or words were you have to roll your R's. I hate when people can not say words correctly like George Bush it's nuclear not nucular. But I really like words that you can use alot of expresion with them.

  19. A word that is difficult for me to say is "aluminum" because there are so many u's and m's. I really dislike it when other people pronounce "striped" as "stripe-ed" and I also dislike it when people pronounce "both" as "bolth". I like saying the word plethora.

  20. When i was younger i could NEVER say the word cinnamon or aluminum. And i hate how psycho is spelled. i cant stand how there is a random p and why is that h there after the c. I dont like when people talk with a british acent. People think that cute and i cant stand it. It bothers me when im at a restraunt and theres like chineese people are talkin really loud in their funky language. That may sound mean but i dont care. Earlier this semester i realized i dont pronounce the t in water . I CANNOT handle when my grandmother says "worsh" instead or wash! At the time i cant think of any words i like saying but i know there are some...
