Feb 2 What do you think of poetry?

Let's discuss poetry - especially in its spoken form. Do you believe it to be a form of art? Do you think it touches the soul? Do you believe it is intellectual? Fun? Have you ever written a poem? How do you think it differs from telling a story?

  1. Honestly, I am really not a fan of poetry. I believe that it is just a really confusing way of telling people a story, that tries to sound sophisticated but really isn't in my opinion. I guess to some people, it could be different. I do not find it fun though, and any time I try to write one, I can never think of anything to say and it just ends up sounding aweful. I think it differs from telling a story because a story is just straight forward, and poems often have hidden meanings and are confusing to try to understand.

  2. I don't like poetry at all. Half of it doesn't make any sense, it has hidden meanings and deeper connotation. Sometimes a "poem" is just a 1 paragraph story but somehow it's poetry. Understanding them is almost impossible unless an expert tells you what it means. I just don't get it.

  3. I'm going to be honest and say that I really dislike poetry. I don't understand why the author can't just write what they mean instead of using a bunch of alliterations and allusions to express their feelings. Interperting them is almost impossible most of the time and it's very frustrating. I prefer analyzing a story over a poem because there are actually plot lines and characters in a story. I supposed poety could be a form of expression and art if you know what the poem means.

  4. I think that poetry is definitely a form of art. It is difficult for me to understand sometimes, especially in spoken form. I have to read and reread a poem many times before I understand the message. In my opinion, it takes a special talent to be able to tell a story in such a small amount of writing. Writing and reading poems takes more thought than writing or reading a story because almost everything is just stated in the book, you don't have to interpret much. I have never written a poem, but I like talking about them in classes to figure out what is going on as well as the main message of the poem.

  5. To be honest, i really dont like poetry. I mean some of it is good, the type that you can relate to and can can underdstand is good. But like some poems are way to confusing and take more time to try and undersand then to read and that makes me frustrated. Also some poems are just really stupid and have no meaning at all. So i only like the poerty that means something and isnt hard to undersand.

  6. Yeah, I'm pretty much in agreement with everyone else here. I dislike poetry mainly because i can never seem to understand it, especially in spoken form. It takes me a while to understand it when I'm reading it, you can't really go back in time when it's spoken. I do believe poetry is an art though, and it takes a lot of time and effort to do it. I've written poems in English classes in the past, but nothing really spectacular. I do enjoy reading some poems that my friends write, not some big fancy author, there a lot easier to comprehend and your not struggling to understand what is being said exactly, and there's no hidden messages. Stories are 10x easier for me, because like Leah said, most of the time there's no analyzing in a story, everything is point blank period. Poetry's really not that bad, i just don't get it "/.

  7. Well... poetry is definitly an art form their is no doubt about that. Therefore, it must speak to most people's soul in one way or the other. It could be debated that all of us have a love for poetry whether we like it or not. Because, in fact, the lyrical music that we listen to on the radio does contain all the necessary parts to a poem. So,poetry does not have to be intellectual at all because not all people using poetic verse are english majors. I do not consider myself intellectual by any means but i still enjoy interpreting them and finding out their meaning. Your last question i believe you worded wrong though. In my opinion, is writing that uses rhythm to effectivly communicate a message. Therefore, a poem can tell a story and does not always have to be "deep."

  9. I personally feel that poetry is amazing... i might not show interest in it at all during class but that is because i am not reading or dealing with the poetry that i like to read. I can really get into a good deep poem that shows a lot of emotion and a lot of feeling.
Poetry is def a form of art and i think, if its the right poem, that poetry can def touch someones soul in many ways. If you read a good poem that you can relate too or even a poem that could remind you of something, that it could just be one of those poems that touches your soul.
I think that most poems could be considered as intellectual because of the fact that some poems took thought to right them and some poems are planned out.
I think that reading poetry differs greatly from reading a story becuase with a poem you, at times, have a rythm to your presentation and with story telling its not ryming or anything of that nature.

  10. Poetry to me is a form of art because it is showing emotion in a possibly abstract way or a very forward way. Art shows emotion in a abstract or realistic way. They both are extremely enjoyable to me.
Now, I am not quite sure what a soul actually is? But I would say, Poetry does have the power to make a person feel and think the way they would not normally react to something.
Anyone can write a poem, intellectual or not. It would have to depend on your definition of intellectual. Does intellectual mean that if one can read, they are considered intellectual. Or if they have had some schooling? Either or, I believe poetry is for everyone. Anyone who lives would be able to understand poetry. Well, they should, unless the poem was intended to be jibber jabber.
Poetry is fun. I especially enjoy Richard Brautigan. I have written many poems. They differ from telling stories because when I am telling a story, I am always striving to get to the point. I like to make it funny along the way. But, poetry is more about the passion and emotion.

  11. Poetry must be looked at as a form of art. A poet's goal is not just to tell a story, to convey a message, but to deliver verbal art. A poet must not only understand what a word means, but also how it can be used, how it flows, and what thoughts it inspires. Poetry is very artistic, but not necessarily intellectual. All one needs to write poetry is imagination, and how to inspire feelings using words as art.

Now, I love some poetry and dislike a great amount as well. The concept is wonderful, and it is fun to figure out what complicated poems mean, but there are some poems that mean nothing to me. They do not inspire feeling. That is not necessarily a fault in the poem, but many poems simply do not inspire emotion in me.

I cannot write poems. I lack the creativity required to do that. But I make up for my poor writing skills with my acting and speaking skills. Poetry recitation can be fun.

  12. Poetry is definitely art, but like all art, it doesn't touch everyone. If you take two people into a museum and have them look at the same painting, one of them may say " The subtle textures in this painting make me feel the artists own inner struggle. The emotions portrayed are just to much to bare!" And then that person might tear up. The other person might say " Oh look, a line."

I, personally, have a great dislike for poetry, but that's because I can't articulate my own feelings, so I feel a great deal of envy and hatred towards those who can,

  13. i dont really care for most poetry myself. i understand it, i just dont like it. i like some poetry that conveys a message that i can relate to. poetry is definitely an art form. i believe it touches the soul of those who can relate or believe in the message of the poem. i believe that some poetry is intellectual, and some is not. some poetry involves a lot of thought and feeling; whereas, some poetry does not. i mean, if i wanted to hear about a day at the market, id talk to my grandma; dont write it down. i think that poetry could be fun if you truly enjoy it. i have never written poems aside from classwork. i think a poem differs from a story because a poem is a shorter way to tell a story without dragging things out. also poetry typically expresses more emotion than a story.
actually, after reflecting, i like poetry. i just hate reading.

  14. Poetry is definitely an art. It is a pure form of expression. The best thing about it is that it doesn't have any rules, really. You can express yourself and your emotion, in any way you like. I agree with others in that poetry doesn't really touch me personally, but I believe it touches others, especially when it is spoken. When poetry is spoken, a lot of emphasis is placed on emotion--how words and phrases are said, where there is a pause, where there is a change in tempo. A lot of those things can't be discerned from reading poetry.

As for my own personal experiences with poetry, I don't have much. I used to write a bunch of rhyming poems in middle school, but nothing that I consider to be real poetry.

Poetry is a form of story-telling, but story telling is not a form of poetry. Poetry has a lot more expression and feeling that is added to a story, while a story focuses in on details.

  16. Ed - YOU are a poet (subtle texture...?) Anyways, I love poetry; I always have. Poetry is powerful to me because it expresses so much even in so few words. The figurative language or even the layout of the poem itself helps to visualize what the speaker is conveying. Also, unlike a story, it can seem meaningless to readers but still be meaningful to the writer. I just finished memorizing my poem. It took about an hour...and I loved every minute of it because the poem spoke to me. For those struggling to memorize...I think that is the key - making it personal.

Gotta put my kid to bed. Peace out.

  18. Poetry is a form of art because it is expressing a feeling. But, i think it is extremely boring. I enjoy giving speeches and talking out loud, but poetry just isn't very exciting for myself. I really don't have any experiences as i rarely do poetry

  19. I think poetry is a good way to express yourself. But I also think you have to keep it from being too boring.I like poetry in some forms but others just completely put me to sleep. I love music and music is a form of poetry. I'm not the most musically talented person but I think I could write some. I haven't really tried but I think I am going to.

  20. Poetry can be a complicated thing but yet beautfifil at the same time... I think it is a great way to express yourself and explain to others how you are feeling without having to come out and tell them. Its a great way to portray a message to your audience but yet you don't have to come right out and tell it to them you can hide it in your words and make them pay attention and search for the meaning behind what is being spoken. I personally do enjoy poetry when it has a deeper hidden meaning and i have to figure out what it is trying to say... but like wellman some poetry can really bore me and it could make me care less about what its trying to say. I do think its like a story but it doesnt come right out and tell you the plot line you have to figure it out for youself and this what i think makes poetry kind of fun. But i still hate memorizing it....

  21. i think that poetry is really amazing because it expresses many feeling. you can tell how the poet was feeling at the time when he wrote his poem. i personally dont like to read poetry but i like to hear people recite poems. writing poems is a really hard thing to do and i think that you have to be really good with words to write poetry.
